Sets in the game of rummy are a group of 3 or more cards of different suits having the same rank. A set can be formed with or without the use of joker card. Here are some examples:

1. A player has Jack of Clubs, Jack of Diamonds and Jack of Hearts in their hand, then they can make a set with it.

2. A player has 5 of Spades, and 5 of Hearts but doesn’t have 5 of Clubs or 5 of Diamonds. In that case, if they have a joker (printed or wildcard) then they can make a set consisting (5 of Spades, 5 of Hearts and a Joker card).

In the game of Indian rummy, a sequence is formed with the combination of 3 or more consecutive cards that have the same suit. To declare the hand before the opponent, it is mandatory to make at least one pure sequence. Players can form pure sequences and impure sequences in order to win the game.

Pure Sequence

Pure sequence is a sequence which is formed with 3 or more consecutive cards having the same suit. The joker card is not used to form a pure sequence.

For instance, a player is given 3 of Diamonds, 4 of Diamonds and 5 of Diamonds then they can make a pure sequence with it.

Impure Sequence

Just like pure sequence, the impure sequence also plays a major role in completing the hand. An impure sequence can be formed with printed or wildcard joker cards. It can be used as a substitute for a missing card in order to complete the sequence.

For instance, a player has 8 of Clubs, 9 of Clubs but does not have 7 of Clubs or 10 of Clubs in their hand, the joker card can be used in place of a missing card (8 of Clubs, 9 of Clubs and Joker card).

Players can make an impure sequence and pure sequence with high-point cards, low-point cards and face cards.

1. Face Card Sequence

Face cards are those cards which have a picture of a face. Out of 13 cards, there are only three face cards in every suit: King, Queen and Jack. Supposedly, if a player is given K of Hearts, Q of Hearts and J of Hearts then they can make a pure sequence of face cards.

2. Low-Point Card Sequence

Low-point cards are the cards whose point value is equal to their rank. Cards from 2 to 5 of all the suits are considered low-point cards. Suppose, you have 3 of Spades, 4 of Spades and 5 of Spades in your hand then you can make a sequence with it.

3. High-Point Card Sequence

Just like low-point cards, the point value of high-point cards is equal to its rank. Cards from 6 to 10 of all suits are considered high-point cards. For example, a player has 6 of Clubs, 7 of Clubs, 8 of Clubs and 9 of Clubs (6, 7, 8 and 9) then they can group the cards and form a sequence of four cards. Forming a sequence of more than 3 cards reduces the number of cards in the hand.

All in all, we can say that, to form sets and sequences, it is imperative to use real-life skills. These skills not only help the player in winning the game but also helps in handling real-life situations. Join the rummy tables at India’s Most Loved Rummy App and win huge cash and rewards.
